Last Daft Punk post for a while. Seriously. I promise.

•December 28, 2007 • 7 Comments

So I know it’s been ages since I’ve last posted, and the greater majority of the posts on Dancetastic have been devoted to Daft Punk, so what could my first post in weeks be about? Daft Punk of course.

I was ecstatic to pick up the Daft Punk Alive 2007 cd. Not to say that I think it’s perfect. I would have been beside myself with glee if it was a direct mix from the board. I really don’t need crowd noise. I would have loved to get the chance to drop a couple of these track live, but the audience applause put a major damper on that. Aside from my quibbles, pure musical joy.

But wait! Where’s the encore??? It’s kind of a bummer that you have to buy the Bonus CD pack, which is extremely hard to find in order to grab the amazing Reprise encore. In my duty to all fans of wonderful music I’m posting it here, and providing a link to iTunes for those that wish to fulfill their karmic duties.

Daft Punk – Reprise (Human After All/One More Time/ Together/Music Sounds Better With You)

And now, back to my vacation.

Out of the Ashes and Into the Fire

City At Night

I lost all of the songs on my hard drive a few months back, and I’ve been slowly piecing back together what I used to have while downloading loads of new music. This can prove to be distracting, and hinders the whole process of remembering exactly what music you lost when there’s gigs upon gigs can be challenging. I just remembered about a band that a friend of mine turned me on to while I was still living in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The Firebird Band was formed and is lead by Chris Broach, who provided guitar and vocals for legendary Chicago indie band Braid. Keeping with the Chicago spirit, he started The Firebird Band as a side project. It’s serious shit too.

Not so much super electro in your face dance dance dance, more intelligent, rocking, and fun. I just re-downloaded their album from iTunes and if you’re into these tracks, do the band a favor and do so yourself.

The Firebird Band – Obsessive Compulsive

The Firebird Band – Dangerous

Further Behind, Beyond, and Bewildering: The Daft Punk Pyramid

•December 11, 2007 • 3 Comments

So while I was at Vegoose I kept on noticing these guys in some amazing satin baseball jackets with an immaculately stitched daft punk logo circa the Homework album.

Like nyyyeah:

Confused and baffled I continued to wonder if they were part of the Daft Punk road crew, stage crew and what not. Turns out they are the wonderful purveyors of the fantastic Solidgoldberger Blog. (I was tipped off to this by San Fran’s Disco Workout). Talk about a diamond in the rough. Ethan Goldgerber is a saint.

He has taken it upon himself to archive the greater majority of Roule, Scratche, (Thomas Bangalter’s labels) and Crydamore (Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo’s label). I must be honest that when I was younger and these tracks were fresh and hot, I wasn’t all that into it. Music Sounds Better With You was an instant pleaser, but the rest were lost on me. Thanks to this/these gentlemen, there’s a second chance to appreciate it. Seriously, head to Solidgoldberger right now. You’d be doing yourself a disservice by wasting even a single moment not checking out the combined works of both members of Daft Punk, DJ Falcon, Alan Braxe, et al…

And here’s some real juicy shit..

Some fan has taken it upon themselves to recreate the motions that Daft Punk makes behind the Pyramid with the use of Abelton Live. I myself have never used Ableton, most of my knowledge of the technicalities of creating electronic music come from the use of hardware MIDI sequencers, synths, and software emulators like ReBirth, and Reason. Yet, this is truly proactive stuff. So check it:

And it’s not worth posting unless we’re getting sexy with some music at some point: NASTY!

These are my current favorite Daft Punk remixes, one off each album, ya ya ya….

Daft Punk – Da Funk (Casino Remix)

Daft Punk – Harder Better Faster Stronger (Jools FM Bandwagon Remix)

Daft Punk – Technologic (Digitalism’s Highway to Paris Remix)

P.S. Spining, oh shit, friday. I’m hoping for a lot of 90′s ghetto booty! All me, all night. Wussup Wussup!

Viva la France!

While searching through the vast ocean of blogs I stumbled upon this: Valerie Another wonderful French music blog. However, their taste in music, and mp3 offerings are so much more satisfying than the standard over distorted Ed Banger inspired music posts.

In fact, I was completely drawn to their 70′s and 80′s movie and soundtrack selections. Really exciting heavily synth scored stuff.

Turns out that the blog is run by the main guy behind College. That’s where I ran into this song. Seems like I’ve been sleeping on the job since is the first time it has graced my ears, but WOW. I’ve got it on almost permanent repeat. I wake up to it, shower to it, and drive to it.

College – Teenage Color (Russ Chimes Remix)

I’m spinning a lot over the next week. Check me out at The Rosary Room tomorrow with Edgartronic and DJ Claire.

Next week I’m doing the annual Windigo Christmas Sweater Party, which is an absolutely amazing time to say the least. Such a deluge of knit sweaters, green, red, and stirrup pants.

Three Classics

•November 30, 2007 • Leave a Comment

There are certain songs that never lose their sentimental value. Some songs that you can listen to a million times and still find beauty in that keeps your head rocking, and brings a smile to your face.

I was having a conversation with my friend Stephen about those songs that became loves at first listen. I can still remember my first CD of true electronic music (rather than one of those CLUB ANTHEMS 96! and the what not) I found it in the used bin at a local record store during a street fair. It was actually the sound track for the Playstation game Wipeout XL. Classics like Fluke’s Atom Bomb, Prodigy’s Firestarter, and Underworld’s Tin There.

Sure, I was a little late in the game, but I was only 14 at the time, and had to teach myself all about the stuff, and internet was still a blistering world of possibilities and animated award GIF’s. The music was amazing, totally overwhelming, I wanted more of it. There was this surge of electronic music, everywhere. Soundtracks started incorporating music from Orbital, Prodigy, and Underworld. The Chemical brothers were becoming a staple on 91x, and staying up late to watch MTV’s AMP on Saturday night was a regular part of my weekly routine.

Of course, this was also the time when they started referring to any and all music produced with synthesizers and drum machines as Electronica, a term which still makes me cringe. At least they didn’t call it Techno. Mentioning that, I should really have Tyler write a techno post.

Off topic, sorry.

So I sat down to think what three songs meant the absolute most to me sentimentally and so on.

These are the three:

Underworld – Born Slippy Nuxx

Orbital – Halcyon On & On

Prodigy – Out of Space (Short Edit)

Timeless gems. Seriously.

And don’t forget tomorrow, rug cutting explosion:

The Return of Snoop

•November 29, 2007 • 3 Comments

Holy crap. I caught this video last night and had to get the song today. It’s available of itunes.

I guess it was originally entitled Sexual Eruption, and sweet jesus is it amazing. He’s mentioned quite a few times that he bought the beat off a producer from Atlanta named Shawty Redd. (THANKS TYLER!!!)This beat would make Timbaland drool. I must say that Snoops last album, The Blue Carpet Treatment, was not his best, and overloaded with guest rappers. But this? This song excites me, so much potential for an amazing album. Download the mp3 here… but you know, honor policy and all, if you dig it pick it up on itunes.

Snoop Dogg – Sensual Seduction

I look forward to dropping the shit out of this song on Saturday at the surf and saddle in Solona Beach. If you’re wise you’ll join me there! No cover. Good Times. And people actually dance there.

See you on the dance floor.

Bloc Party, Flux Copacitors, and Power Rangers

•November 18, 2007 • 4 Comments

To say that I love Bloc Party would be an understatement. I truly see their music as a major leap forward in a musical scene which has been rather stagnant over the last few years. Seriously, what happened? I blame nu-metal. No one wanted to play music after that shit went down.

Anyways, I digress. Thanks to the wonderful people over at Digital Eargasm I just got my hands on this wonderful new single (and remixes) from them. I’m even more excited about this than the greater majority of A Weekend in the City. The video as well is an amazing spectacle of camp and kaiju awesomeness. There’s a bit of a rumble over the auto tune on the vocals giving a Cheresque “Do You Believe” kind of vibe to it. Regardless, it’s extremely danceable and excitement worthy.

Bloc Party – Flux

Bloc Party – Flux (JFK Remix)

Bloc Party – Flux (Punx Soundcheck Tenebrae)

Bloc Party – Flux (Metal on Metal Remix)

Bloc Party – Flux (Goodbooks Magnetism Remix)

ps: Something about Kele’s vocals remind me tremendously of Bryan Adams vocals on Chicane’s trance track Don’t Give Up from back in 2000 or whatever. Am I talking crazy here?

pps: The video for this song is something else as well:

See you at Scolari’s on Thursday.
